If You Want to Get to Heaven

Author's synopsis
From the jacket blurb of "If You Want to Get to Heaven":

It's 1973 and Rick Harrington has just earned a degree in music. His teachers tell him he's got golden ears. Play a jazz chord and he'd whistle the inside voicings with ease'if he could only whistle. Hard to do when you've got cerebral palsy. Hard to get anything going when the world won't cut you a break. But his break finally comes when his brother Kid, a rock-and-roller, needs a soundman and Rick is swept into a rip-roaring rock-and-roll circus of sex, drugs, and ambition.

'Not because of your condition or anything,' a mysterious beauty says to him in the midst of a post-concert bash, 'but this doesn't seem like your scene.' 'What other scene do I have?' he asks her. Kid Chrysler and the Cruisers are his shot at life in the real world'though unreal might better define the lifestyle of a rock band.

Confronted the next day by a bathroom door too narrow for a wheelchair, Kid tells Rick 'The old family tradition, bro. Time to hop aboard the Chrysler Express.' He's carried on his brother's back again. When will it stop? When will Rick's talent, not his brother's interventions, be enough to open a door of opportunity?

IF YOU WANT TO GET TO HEAVEN is about brothers in harmony and discord, about the triumphs and tragedies of a rock-and-roll band on the road, and about one very special man you won't forget.

Igneous Petrology
Published in Paperback by Longman Science & Technology (August, 1987)
Author: Anthony Hall
Average review score:

Essential Student Material
This book has something that is sorely lacking in many textbooks. It is easy to read without skimping on the technical material, and a must for geology students, especially those with an interest in petrology. Ample examples are given and fully explained in context on a wide range of concepts essential to the students understanding. While perhaps not as in depth as Wilson, this book is comprehensive, well structured and provides a more than adequate introduction to the fascinating world of igneous petrology. Two thumbs up!

The Illustrated Collector's Guide to Hawkwind
Published in Paperback by Collector's Guide Pub (July, 1995)
Author: Robert Godwin
Average review score:

An invaluable resource for any collector of psychedelia.
Formed in Early 1969 and playing one of their first shows outside England's Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, Hawkwind has always been at the forefront of musical exploration. Until now, getting a cogent perspective on the band's recorded oveure and ever-changing personnel has been as elusive as reading the spinning label of a 45 rpm record. Robert Godwin has undertaken this arduous task, and the results are close to stellar. With the help of Hawkwind members Dave Brock and Michael Moorcock (Moorcock contributed heavily in the lyric dept. in the 70s),Godwin has created a reference tool which is exhaustive in its scope and in every way essential. Tracing the band as buskers in England's Ladbroke Grove through countless benefit gigs and hallucinogen-fueled pyrotechnic excursions into the realms of high psychedelia, Godwin chronicles rehearsal tapes, bootlegs and studio outtakes as well as the band's 100+ vinyl and CD releases. Songs are cross-referenced by title as are the near epic-length space jams, EPs and singles. A must for every collector of 60s-90s psychedelia and an entertaining read for the uninitiated, Robert Godwin's Illustrated Collector's Guide to Hawkwind has "Quark, Strangeness and Charm."

Illustrated Discography of Hot Rod Music, 1961-1965 (Rock and Roll Reference Series, No 32)
Published in Hardcover by Popular Culture Ink (May, 1990)
Authors: John Blair and Stephen McParland
Average review score:

Why is this book so hard to find????
This book answered questions I've had for years about my collection of hot rod music. There should be many people out there looking for this book. It may not be completely comprehensive, but who'd know. If it had had better distribution, maybe there'd have been revisions and second editions. Personally I'd really like to see a 1950's version of this book.

Buy this book and check it against your list. You'll be glad you did.
